John. John Deere offers physical damage insurance that covers your tractor for the full purchase price. The reason the dealer arrived at an even $100 premium is that JD insurance recently changed their premium policy to a minimum $100 premium. If you'd bought it a few months ago, it would of only been pennies a month. :) It's still a good deal at $100 though. I always offer it to customers as it is nearly impossible to beat. Dealers do not make anything on the added insurance policies. It's just a nice option offered by Deere.

Hope not to insult your inteligence here, but I've had a number of complaints over the years from customers who bought lawn and C.U. tractors from me. All of them complained about the engine stalling, coughing, or quitting while driving along sidehills. In every case they were leaning uphill enough to take enough weight off the seat to activate the operator presence system, thus killing the engine untill they got their butt planted again. Just a thought..

Hi Jim.
I sell JD and while I'm not at liberty to publicly announce dealer cost, I can tell you that dealer cost is a LOT more than 2/3 of MSRP.
You are correct about about the price leader models. Dealer cost is an even higher percentage of MSRP on these models.

Hi guys. The JD 48 hoe is only on hold for 45-4700 tractors. I was informed that the fix is out and the back ordered units should start shipping any day now. There was not a problem with the mounts for the smaller 4000 series tractors. That's why the last poster got his so quickly.

Robert, Manufacturers always put a drive line on that will be long enough for any possible application and many times you may have to shorten them. A couple things to remember though. You must pull the two halves of the drive line apart and cut equal lengths off each half. Take the shields off and cut them seperately. You want to shorten the shields about an inch more than the shaft so when you go to slide the halves back together you will have about an inch of shaft showing on each half. If you cut the shaft and shield flush, you will have a terrible time trying to slide the halves together. A local machine shop should be able to do this for you in just a few minutes. Good luck.

Doug, The JD 261 has two anti-scalp rollers. One in front/center and one underneath/center. You can also order a front set of castoring gauge wheels that bolt on each side. The part # for the kit is BM16230. With this setup you would be hard pressed to scalp. (even if you hit one of Toms groundhogs) Cheers.

Roger, the main differences are the larger variety of models and options, and the color of the paint. It used to be yellow and now it's burnt orange. The overall design is the same. I would recommend a model 500 for your tractor. I've got one on my 35hp tractor. Nothing you can't do with it. I'm guessing your older blade is a yellow "BIG RHINO" which is now the model 800. Don.

Kim, look up the number for Steve Hoffelman in Carlton, Oregon. He is a retired Kubota dealer who now buys and sells late model, low hour Kubotas and John Deeres. He is honest and his prices are reasonable. I have done business with him several times and have always had good results. There are reputable dealers for both makes in your area so parts and service shouldn't be an issue. He also delivers!! Sorry I don't have his number handy. Don.

Nuc, there's one factor that you may not understand. Tractor manufacturers build different variations of similar tractors exclusively for certain markets around the world. The more advanced the countrys farming practices, the more advanced the tractor and also the higher priced it will be. For example, JD still builds tractors for sale in Argentina and Mexico whose designs became obsolete in the US up to twenty years ago. I would suspect you might find similar differences in tractors built for your market as well. I do know that MF is still building tractors for less developed ag markets that are virtually unchanged from the ones they sold in the US in the 1960's. Just my $.02. Don.

Harry, the JD 790 and new 990 models are lower cost alternatives to the full feature 4000 series. Neither are available with a hydro trans though. Both are proven, solid tractors. Check the link below. This dealer has specs and pricing.

In the past months since I began spending time on this board, I've noticed quite a few comments from folks wishing that tractor manufacturers would pay more attention to forums like this one. I agree but must admit that I thought it was doubtful as well. Until today..... <br>On Jan. 27., using only my own name, I submitted photos of a JD 4100 with modifications for specialty row crop use. The CTB Webmaster graciously put them up on the CTB Home Page for all to see! Today, Feb. 07, the dealership for whom I work received an email from our Branch Manager regarding my photos of the 4100 on this web site that had been noticed by the folks at John Deere, Agusta, who had in turn contacted him. As I began to read the copy that my boss gave me I started to get that "Oh boy, I'm in big trouble" feeling. But it turns out I'm not in trouble. The factory wanted more information about specialty applications for compact tractors and want to make sure that they are meeting the needs of different markets. So, everyone wave and say Hi! You never know who may be watching. Don.

Top speed is just under 16 mph, and yes there is a huge difference in power in the higher gears but this tractor might still suprise you in the lower gears. When spraying, it is working at five to six mph while towing a 200 gal. sprayer w/tandem axles and an 18 row boom. Handles it very well. When customizing MFWD tire sizes, you calculate the ratio of the factory tires, based on the rolling radious, front vs. rear, then apply that ratio to the new rear tire to find the correct front tire. Any tire store that deals in ag tires can do this calculation for you and translate the rolling radius to an actual tire size.
The reason such tall tires are used for this application is simply for crop clearance. Onions will be damaged if they are scuffed just prior to being sprayed.

I visited with the J.D. Dealer Assistance Center today. I am waiting on a 48 hoe that has been put on hold do to the potential problem you described. Sounds like the problem is not common, but it only takes one machine with a potential safety problem to prompt serious examination by Deere. I was told today that new brackets and hardware have been designed, tested and are ready for production as soon as they get tooled up to build them. Availability of new 48 backhoes is tentatively scheduled for late Feb. Also, all units built before will be updated with the new parts as part of a mandatory safety product improvement program. Current owners should be getting a letter from Deere to check their mounting hardware daily until the P.I.P has been done. I believe this only affects 48 backhoes for 45,46,4700 tractors.

Roger, We never really got into selling compacts until the 70 series, but if memory serves, 50 series P.S. was a dealer install using the same kit you're talking about. I don't remember it being factory installed. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong):}

Steve, J.D. is making a real effort to get orders out quicker. The 42-4600 HYDRO tractors are currently the slowest in coming due to huge demand. Gear models are easier to get. J.D. is currently turning out twice as many 4000 series tractors than one year ago, and approx. FOUR times as many as three years ago. Demand seems to be keeping ahead of production no matter how they try to anticipate market share growth. Even though it's no fun waiting, these figures should give you an idea of how great the product is. Your patience will be rewarded!
